If you are looking for a portable, lightweight and sturdy controller for mobile use then look no further. The PCR-1 is, for its price, a fantastic peice of kit. The build is strong and built to last and comes complete with its own gig bag.
I have been using the PCR-1 with my Compaq N620c laptop to control Reason, Ableton live, Sonar 4 and also my Korg MS2000BR and a Yamaha RY20 drum machine. The PCR-1 is incredibly easy to setup for many different usages and comes complete with software enabling you to assign midi messages to the pots and buttons of your choice, you can also download midi maps from edirols website for popular software.
This controller has been designed to be super compact and because of this those at edirol opted for the new S.L.I.M design which, regardless of corporate jargon, basicaly means that the keys only travel half the distance. Many have said that this is a bad thing and that controlling the velocity is much more dificult - i have no idea what these people have been playing with - but i dont think its the PCR-1. I think the keys are great and actualy found when i used it to play basslines in live performance that the notes seem much snappier than with a full sizes controller keyboard. 10/10 for that Roland.
Another thing alot of people dont like about the PCR-1 is the Pitch and modulation controlls. The pitch is mearly and up/down switch which toggles from either off to on and the modulation switch is a simple auto releasing on/off switch. This was another thing i have found really usefull when it comes to playing basslines live. If your using a 303 synth sound, you can set the pitch bend timing and create nice 303 sounding slides and with a little knowledge of synths you can setup the modulation to apply the accent. This i found very sexy and unusual and i have now become quite attached to them.
The sound card is o.k - its not brilliant - but as a portable method of recording in at line level - it is very handy. When combined with a good portable mixer it can then be used to record mic's and guitar at a good quality.
overall - i like this - not a first controller to buy - but a nice addition.
